The View cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin has opened up about the “somewhat traumatic” birth experience of her first baby, Justin, following a two-month maternity leave from the Hot Topics table.

Hours after reclaiming her seat on the panel, the 36-year-old Republican commentator and former Donald Trump White House staffer joined View producer Brian Teta on the show’s companion podcast Behind the Table, where she explained why she was back on the program following a relatively short maternity leave.

“This was your call, I want to be clear about that,” Teta told her. “It was,” Griffin confirmed. “To me, it ended up feeling perfect,” the cohost explained, adding that, “Because the timing that our show tapes, I’m able to leave midafternoon and be home to my baby.”

She then explained why she chose to name her first child, Justin Patrick Griffin Jr., after her husband — switching from the name she’d originally chosen after a “somewhat traumatic birth experience” in February.

“I had to be induced, I started having an issue that’s hard to explain, but he came a few days early,” Griffin told Teta. The process of jumpstarting her labor contractions left Griffin vomiting for “eight hours,” and after delivery, a new issue arose.

“Once he was born, my placenta got stuck, so I started to hemorrhage. It’s in that moment where, four hours of active labor, you’re finally holding your child, it’s the most magical thing,” Griffin remembered. Before she was taken to the operating room, she said she realized something.

“In that moment where they handed him to me, I looked at my husband and everything flashed before my eyes: The two years of IVF, the money, the toll on my body, the hormones, the screaming at my husband — you get a different version of your spouse when they’re going through all of that,” Griffin said.

As she told Teta, her husband being by her side during both the IVF process and “a really scary final stretch of labor” solidified the name she chose for her first child: “I was like, this is Justin, this is somebody I can only hope is going to be a kind, decent, humble, amazing man like my husband, And it just fit.”

Griffin has long been open about her IVF journey, revealing on a 2024 installment of The View that cohosts Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin helped her through the challenging process.

“My husband and I have been hoping, trying to get pregnant for about a year and a half, and it wasn’t happening naturally, so we made the decision to move forward with IVF. This is my second cycle, so, tomorrow I will be in the doctor’s office dealing with that,” Griffin told Teta at the time. “I wanted to share it for a couple of reasons. I had no idea at my age how hard this actually would be. I’m only 35 and, to me, I was like, I’ve got plenty of time, this won’t be that difficult. I’m healthy, I work out, I eat right. My body was just not cooperating.”
