Savannah Guthrie is officially back on Today, marking her emotional return to the anchor desk on Monday, April 6, for the first time in over two months following the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, on February 1.
At 54, Savannah joined co-anchor Craig Melvin to start the show, sharing a heartfelt moment with viewers after a difficult time away. “Pretty shot of the sun coming up. Good morning, welcome to Today on this Monday morning, we’re so glad you started your week with us, and it’s good to be home,” Savannah said as she settled back into her role on air.
Craig Melvin expressed his joy at Savannah’s return, saying, “Yes, it’s good to have you back at home,” to which she replied, “Well, here we go, ready or not. Let’s do the news.”
The morning show was filled with warmth as Al Roker and Carson Daly joined the team at 7:30 a.m., and the group shared a cheerful moment, welcoming viewers back from a commercial break.
Savannah, clearly touched by the overwhelming support, commented, “Some beautiful signs out there. I’m excited to see them, give them all a hug. I’ve been really feeling the love so much.”:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2)/savannah-guthrie-today-show-040626-3-773073fbadd342fd9fa4f0fee9a3d242.jpg)
Before her official return to the Today set, Savannah had made a brief visit to Studio 1A at Rockefeller Center on March 5, after spending weeks in Arizona with her family while the search for her mother continued. She stopped by the studio to thank her colleagues for their support during such a challenging time.
In a moving interview with Hoda Kotb on March 27, Savannah opened up about her decision to return to work, saying, “It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness, and I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not. But I can’t not come back because it’s my family. I think it’s part of my purpose right now. I want to smile. And when I do, it will be real. And my joy will be my protest. My joy will be my answer.”
She added, “I don’t know if I can do it. I don’t know if I’ll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try. I’m not gonna be the same, but maybe it’s like that old poem, more beautiful in the broken places.”
As the search for Nancy enters its tenth week with no suspects identified, Savannah’s return to Today offers a glimpse of strength and resilience amidst unimaginable heartache. Her return to the studio marks a new chapter in her journey, one filled with both sorrow and the undeniable support of her Today family.
Savannah’s ability to keep going, sharing her light and joy with viewers while navigating her personal grief, speaks to the strength she continues to show during this difficult time. As the search for her mother continues, viewers are sending love and support to the Today anchor, knowing her journey is just beginning.
