CALAIS, France — Shocking video footage that surfaced online this week shows a group of masked men, apparently British, launching a violent assault on migrant dinghies on a beach in northern France, prompting widespread condemnation and urgent calls for investigation from French and British authorities.
The clip, which has been viewed millions of times on social media platforms, depicts several individuals dressed in dark clothing and wearing balaclavas charging toward inflatable boats used by migrants attempting to cross the English Channel. The men are seen slashing the dinghies with knives, kicking them and physically confronting migrants and aid workers present on the beach.
French police have confirmed they are investigating the incident as a possible case of violent vigilantism. A spokesperson for the Pas-de-Calais prefecture described the event as “unacceptable acts of aggression” that endangered lives and violated French law.

The footage appears to have been recorded in the early hours near the town of Wimereux, a known departure point for small boat crossings toward Britain. At least two dinghies were reportedly damaged during the confrontation, though no serious injuries have been officially confirmed.
British authorities have also expressed concern. A spokesperson for the Home Office said the government “strongly condemns any form of vigilantism” and is working with French counterparts to identify those responsible. “Such actions undermine the rule of law and do nothing to address the complex issue of irregular migration,” the statement read.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions over Channel crossings. More than 15,000 migrants have reached British shores so far this year, according to official figures, despite repeated pledges by successive UK governments to stop the boats.
Far-right groups in Britain and parts of Europe have increasingly used social media to call for direct action against what they describe as an “invasion” by migrants. Some online commentators have praised the masked men as “defenders of Britain,” while others have warned that such attacks risk escalating into broader violence.

Human rights organizations reacted with outrage. “This is not justice — it is thuggery,” said Marie-Laure Bonnafous of Amnesty International France. “Attacking vulnerable people fleeing conflict and poverty, many of whom include women and children, is both morally reprehensible and illegal.”
French authorities have stepped up beach patrols in recent months, but activists say the measures remain insufficient to prevent departures or protect migrants from harassment. Aid groups operating on the French coast reported that volunteers have faced increasing hostility from local residents and outsiders.
The video’s rapid spread has reignited debate about the failures of European migration policy. Critics on the right argue that years of ineffective border control have left ordinary citizens feeling abandoned, pushing some toward desperate measures. Those on the left contend that inflammatory rhetoric from politicians has normalized violence against migrants.
Legal experts say the attackers could face serious charges, including assault, criminal damage and potentially conspiracy. French prosecutors have not ruled out terrorism-related charges if the attack is found to be politically motivated.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office declined to comment directly on the footage but reiterated that “vigilante action has no place in a civilized society.” In Paris, President Emmanuel Macron’s government faced renewed criticism from opposition parties for failing to secure the coastline.
For now, the identities of the masked men remain unknown. French police are examining the video for clues and have appealed for witnesses. British police have also launched an inquiry into whether any UK nationals were involved.
The incident highlights the growing frustration on both sides of the Channel. While governments struggle to find long-term solutions to irregular migration, the risk of ordinary citizens taking the law into their own hands appears to be increasing.
Whether this video represents an isolated act of rage or the beginning of a more dangerous trend of vigilante justice across Europe remains to be seen. What is clear is that the images of masked men attacking migrant boats have shocked many and deepened an already polarized debate.
