“ANDERSON COOPER WAS FINE… UNTIL HE GOT TO ONE PARTICULAR PRODUCT.” What started as a routine CNN segment quickly went off-script when Cooper began reading through a list of Trump-branded products — including coins, sneakers, a Bible, and a gold smartphone. Then one marketing claim made him stop cold, triggering a reaction that has viewers replaying the clip and debating it all over social media.

What To Know

  • Anderson Cooper broke into laughter while listing various Trump-branded products on-air.
  • These items included expensive commemorative coins, Bibles, sneakers, and a gold-plated smartphone.
  • Cooper questioned the marketing material for several of these products.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper cracked up on-air on Tuesday (June 9) as he ran through several Donald Trump-branded products the president has been selling on his website.

The segment on Tuesday’s episode of Anderson Cooper 360 started with a look at the commemorative “We, The People” medallion coins being sold in connection with the UFC event taking place on the White House South Lawn on June 14. As Cooper pointed out, the price of these coins would cost the buyer just under $12,000 in total.

“They’re all designed by President Trump himself, which is amazing. Where does he find the time?” Cooper quipped.

He then reflected on some of Trump’s past products, including the $99.99 “Presidential” and “First Lady” editions of the King James Bible. “Then there’s Trump’s sneakers,” Cooper continued. “The ‘Never Surrender’ high-tops, which at the time retailed for “$399.”

While Cooper noted that the sneakers went on sale before Trump was reelected, he highlighted a March social media post in which the president shared a headline about the shoes selling for “$180,000” at a sneaker convention in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“That presidential post about sneaker prices during the war. Where does he find the time?” Cooper added.

He then turned his attention to the Trump smartphone. “The $499 gold-plated phones finally started shipping a few weeks ago, nearly a year after initially taking customers’ money,” Cooper explained before reading out some of the phone’s marketing material.

“While originally touted as being ‘Made in the USA,’ they’re now marketed as ‘designed with American….,’ sorry,” the former 60 Minutes correspondent said as he broke into laughter. “‘Designed with American values in mind.’”

As he continued to chuckle, Cooper added, “We should just pause and reflect on that claim for a moment: ‘Designed with American values in mind.’ I don’t know what that means. Someone was thinking about America when they signed the contract to hawk these?”

He added, “Experts say they closely resemble a phone made in China, but somehow, American values were thought about when they were designed. Rest easy.”
